are you a circle or a box ?!?
written and animated by cris carpio-garing
Okay, so in everything, we should always find the good sides, right? Well, in occupying my position with the paper, i was bombarded with a workload that should be done by four people...
The good thing? I was able to learn not one, but about five computer programs for design and graphics.
now that we are nearing may (in which a select group, including yours truly, is cooking up something for the filipino youth here in italy), i had to face the fact that i will not find a kind (and time-endowed) person to help me with doing the presentation for aforementioned event.
course of action? the old trusted method of D-I-Y (do-it-yourself)
so after long hours of experimenting, my pc rebooting and shutting down and rebooting at its own perfervid pleasure, and a couple of sleepless nights, here's my simple (yet cute, as others have attested) teaser.
hope you like it!

discovering YAEL NAIM
I think that what i want to remember of the "Great" SanRemo Italian Music Festival of 2008 is the performance of one of the international guests at the said event.
It was the first time I've heard of her, seen her and witnessed her singing live!!! And i love her! I hope good things come her way!
Her name is Yael Naim.
This is the actual Music Video of the same song, "New Soul"
A French-Israeli singer and songwriter, Naim's first solo album, In a Man's Womb, was released in 2001, but it was with the release of her second and self-titled album, in which the songs were in French, English and HEbrew, that she gained critical fame and recognition.
SHe is the first Israeli solo artist to ever have a top ten hit in the United States and guess what, she even did a Britney Spears cover! TOXICCCCC! BUt Yael's?!? ABsolutely not! Her version is wicked!

reading remo
For a festival that's been running and churning out if not the best and most remembered Italian songs, then at least, the stars of the past(such golden times), present (even if just the short present) and future (painfully unpredictable), the SanRemo Music Festival sure is an annual rima oris (hehee - rima oris - maybe it's better if the vocalizations are obturated) of controversy.
oh well, why fight it. let's be one of them. the public. of the songs in the festival, much have been said of singer L'Aura's socio-politically-inspired (quasi) anthem, BASTA!
Testo (di Laura Abela):
Sai che succede amica mia?
C'è chi ora prova a portar via
Sogni giovani che il tempo cullerà,
Pieni di libertà
Gente che resta e che va via
Colpa di un uomo o della democrazia?
Dai peccati Madre Guerra assolverà
Chi la venererà!
C'è qualcuno là
Che ci aiuterà
A dire "Basta!"?
C'è qualcuno là che
Fermare potrà
La violenza?
Sai che succede amica mia?
Quella che oggi è una bugia
L'indomani per qualcuno evolverà
E sarà verità
C'è qualcuno là
Che ci aiuterà
A dire "Basta!"?
C'è qualcuno là che
Fermare potrà
La violenza?
C'è qualcuno là
Nell'immensità
della terra?
C'è qualcuno là che
Vivere saprà
Con la testa?
Quante pietre da scagliare
Tiene in serbo,generale,
Il suo esercito di frode ed empatia?
Quante sono le persone
Che in nome del Signore
Finiranno nella cenere?
C'è qualcuno là
Che ci aiuterà
A dire "Basta!"?
C'è qualcuno là che
Fermare potrà
La violenza?
C'è qualcuno là
Nell'immensità
della terra?
C'è qualcuno là che
Vivere saprà
Con la testa?
english translation (done by me! if you think i did something wrong, pls. do write me!)
Words by Laura Abela:
DO you know, my friend, what is happening?
there are those who would take away
young dreams that time will sway,
Filled with freedom
People who remain and people who go away
Is it man's fault or democracy's?
From sins Mother War will absolve
Who will revere them?
Is there someone there
who will help us
To say "Enough!"?
Is there someone there
who can end
the violence?
DO you know, my friend, what is going on?
What is there of today but a lie
That tomorrow for someone
becomes the truth.
Is there someone there
who will help us
To say "Enough!"?
Is there someone there
who can end
the violence?
Is there someone there
in the immensity of the Earth
Of the earth
Is there someone there who
knows of Life
with his mind?
How many more stones to fling
has the general set aside
in his army of deception and empathy?
How many are they
That in the name of the Lord
would end up in ash?
There is someone there
That will help us
Is there someone there
who will help us
To say "Enough!"?
Is there someone there
who can end
the violence?
Is there someone there
in the immensity of the Earth
Of the earth
Is there someone there who
knows of Life
with his mind? ( or possibly, is there someone there who only lives LIFE with his mind?)
now let's get to the fun part.
below are some of the contestants in the festival (in varying degrees of popularity) but what i've done is, I've included below each video a funny, bashing or praising comment from our Youtube peers.
Is it really a human trait to find faults in others? I've never really met anyone who's so saintly, so kind and proper that he never at least thinks something ill of a person (no matter how small it is). I include myself in this. I try, but sometimes the best (or maybe, it should be the worst) of situations can get to me.
Michele Zarrillo "L'ultimo film insieme"
5 rules for writing an Italian song You have to mention 1/ The sea, 2/Without you 3/love, pain and the heart 4/Without you 5/The full moon. In short, the same tired thing. Like all the other songs. When will Italy wake up?
Paolo Meneguzzi "Grande"
from Anahata76
Sono vicino al tuo dolore Paolo :)))))) ...oh god...i opened the video and i thought the meat shop owner's son was singing at the Cotechino (Italian meat specialty)Festival and then I realized it was Meneguzzi suffering from intestinal colic and unmistakable signs of dysentery ... couldn't they have called 118 instead? instead of making him suffer like that? I suffer with you, Paolo!
Anna Tatangelo-"Il Mio Amico"
from bradshaw84
DOes it mean that she wants to be the new gay icon because she believes we are the best (paying) public? Or is it only because we're the last of the public to tolerate her? DIsillusioned, it is certainly not a neomelodic ballad written by her oh so kind friend to be close to her, especially with those words, that ridiculous verses and Son of the same God, phrases designed to relaunch her to her public of simpletons! ANna, if you really want us to like you, you have to change style (more hip, younger), lyrics (less ridiculous), look (bitchier and sexier), and most of all, boyfriends!!

Youth for Human Rights Ads Campaign YOU TOO CAN HELP!
WE ARE ALL BORN FREE AND EQUAL
Sit down in a Paris café or a restaurant in Florence with in-house monitors and you may be impressed by powerful audio-visual messages that truly teach human rights.
Released in June of this year, these 30 or 60 second spots bring to life all 30 articles of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Their appeal was instant and within weeks they were showing on over 1,000 TV stations around the world.
FREEDOM OF THOUGHT
Three months after their debut, word of mouth has transcended them to a new level beyond the TV airwaves. This week alone saw new showings on screens at gas stations in Johannesburg, South Africa; in 64 theatres in Buffalo, New York State, and on two dozen screens in the largest bookstore chain in Rome. They are being played in city store front windows in London and on a bus line in Frankfurt, Germany.
RIGHT TO MARRIAGE AND FAMILY
On a more official level, the 30 PSAs premiered last August as part of an international human rights summit held at United Nations headquarters, where they received a standing ovation from UN officials and human rights delegates representing 49 nations. That same evening they met with enthusiastic response from 2,000-plus New Yorkers who thronged New York’s Union Park Square for a human rights concert that rocked the city. Two weeks later they were the highlight of a presentation given by a 14-year old Youth for Human Rights representative from Austria at the Palais Wilson, seat of the UN High Commissioner of Human Rights. The event was the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child’s annual “Day of Discussion”.
RIGHT TO A NATIONALITY
The uses for these messages are limitless. A representative for one UN non-governmental organization wrote of his organization’s intention to “spread your short films in the best way we can, since we are working in about 60 countries with like-minded friends.”
RIGHT TO LIFE
These PSAs are part of a package of the audio visual and written materials produced by Youth for Human Rights International.
